Toni Medalla, Montseny
The other day I went up to the Costa del Montseny to visit Toni Medalla in his ceramic studio. The ceramist is known in the valley for using the traditional Japanese technique named Raku. As we enter I find him in the middle of all his creations and memories from different travels.
I’ve always loved how ateliers often carry many objects, photos, little memories that carry high emotional value. It immediately brings you a certain sensation and tells you so much about the artist. Artworks are a reflection of our emotions, it’s where creativity is born.

Toni Medalla welcomes us with a warm hibiscus tea served in one of his heavy cups. It reminds me of what he explained in a workshop I had previously attended: “the weight of your cup influences how you will take your beverage. A heavy cup will help you to ground in the moment.”
We talk about life, the places he’s been and the lessons ceramics teach us. For him, the energy you put into making an object is the one you will feel when using it. Something that has been made with care, time or love will also be treated in that manner. It automatically forces you to bring more attention to that moment. Or how an object has the power to remind us to be more present.
